The demands on teachers has been tremendous as they have adjusted to new ways of teaching and increased workloads, already stacked high before this. Quite simply, teachers are burned out, overwhelmed and running on empty.
Leadership acknowledge the extra effort they’re putting in, but this is not translating into support and solutions and teachers are left in a never-ending uphill struggle, with no end in sight.
Virtual Classroom, bricks and mortal classrooms, many are not juggling both! So throw in double set up time - your resources planned (virtual and physical), your assignments ready (virtual and physical) and your lesson plan good to go – you guessed it – virtual and physical.
For how many students? Who knows, who knows what students will turn up today, it’s a bit like looking into a crystal ball these days. And what about parents? Will we have any parents around to help (or hinder) the lessons? It gets towards lunchtime and you’re mind drifts towards that to-do list, but you realize a couple of students could do with a chat, four parents have emailed with concerns, and as eight people haven’t bothered to turn up to class you need to re-plan your activity groups.
Teaching day over, and now it’s time to upload all your work online, complete the mountains of admin required and get to that stack of marking waiting for your attention. Oh well, another day gone and yet not one extra thing ticked off the to-do list. Wake, Work, Sleep, Repeat. Maybe one day I’ll get to research those new resources and lessons I think my students will love!
